The subway system in the US city of Boston will soon be equipped with train cars "Made in China," which will be shipped to the city in December.

The current train cars in Boston have been running for decades and are too old to provide a modern trip experience.

Made in northeastern China's Jilin Province, the new cars can run at a speed of 102 kilometers per hour.

Although designed according to the US standard, the producing method of the cars is owned by a Chinese company named CRRC, the China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation.

The final products match the Boston subway's strict maximum weight requirement of 34 tons per car, which barred a lot of world-famous companies from getting the order form.

"The cars have to be solid, but light-weight at the same time," technology manager of the project Hong Haifeng told CCTV's Mandarin news channel. "And they have to be compatible with the century-old facilities in Boston."

This is the first time for Chinese rail equipment to be used in the United States. The new cars are designed to run for 30 years.

The second Thursday of each November is Guinness World Records Day. Every year, it’s a time when we get to appreciate the marvelous things that people have achieved.

Well, perhaps it isn’t. Apparently, some of the record makers and breakers seem more admirable than others. It’s perfectly possible to appreciate the achievement of a sportsperson like Usain Bolt, for example, who is the only athlete to win the 100m and 200m Olympic titles three times in a row. Running is a tradition that goes all the way back to the Greek Olympic competitions.

But one wonders whether the person who holds the record for growing the largest onion, or the one who holds the record for the most wooden toilet seats broken within a minute using only the forehead, is quite as worthy of our admiration as Bolt is.

The Greek poet Pindar wrote great poems to the athletes of his day. It seems unlikely that anyone today would compose an ode to a man for growing an unusually big vegetable. In other words, some of these Guinness records seem a bit silly.

So, why do people choose to try and attain world record holder status for, to put it kindly, such pointless things? Perhaps the experts can help. Speaking to The Atlantic magazine, Stephen Garcia, a professor of psychology at the University of Michigan, tried to explain it. “People are always trying to find a way to make themselves seem like they are at the top,” he said.

It’s not that they want to be the best at everything but just to be the best at something. They seek what he calls “optimal distinctiveness.” It seems to them that everyone stands out at something, and these record holders just want to discover what their “something” is.

That means it isn’t just crazy competitiveness that makes people consider spending a huge amount of time, effort and perhaps money being the best at a meaningless thing – like cycling backwards while playing a violin – but a desire to be part of society.

Guinness World Records Day is not only about fun. Above all, it’s about letting people count for something in the world.

Facial recognition is becoming increasingly common in China, where it has been installed at ATM machines and KFC restaurants.

Now the technology has arrived in university classrooms to track student attendance.

Shen Hao, a professor with Communication University of China, is using facial recognition in his six courses to keep track of the attendance of more than 300 students.

Before every class, teachers activate a new attendance system installed on his tablet computer.

Students stand in front of the screen one by one to have their photos taken and matched with those in the school's database.

The system is based on facial recognition technology from Chinese Internet giant Baidu's open AI platform.

"The traditional way of tracking attendance is through a roll call. The new system saves time and reduces the workload of teachers," said Shen.

A course offered at a university in East China will link students' weight loss directly to their marks in a bid to curb student obesity.

The course from Zhou Quanfu, teacher at the Nanjing Agricultural University in Jiangsu province, aims to encourage overweight students to control their diets and increase their exercise.

Zhou said 60 percent of a student's grade will be determined by their weight loss. If they shed 7 percent of their original weight, they can pass the course.

According to a student who declined to give her real name, the students run on treadmills in the school's fitness room and walk 10 kilometers every Monday and Friday evening.

Every Wednesday afternoon, the teacher leads them on a mountain-climbing excursion.

"We use mobile apps to record daily food intake," said the student. Before eating, they send photos of their food via a mobile app for suggestions from nutritionists.

According to Zhou, only students with more than 30 percent body fat or a body mass index over 28 can sign up for the course.
