Leisure time 第九期

一、News Spot Light

1The United States holds the 2022 midterm elections

Recently, the United States held the 2022 midterm elections, and all 50 states and Washington, D.C. have opened polling stations.

This is the first time the United States has held elections at the federal level since Capitol Hill. Unlike presidential elections, the key to the midterm elections is a bipartisan battle for congressional seats in the United States. This also means that voters' intuitive feelings about the economy and local affairs in their constituencies can determine the direction of the election.

The Associated Press pointed out that despite the pressure of Republicans on Democrats in traditional blue states such as New York and California, the fierce competition for the 2022 midterm elections is still concentrated in swing states such as Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, all of which could affect the outcome of the presidential election in 2024.

Due to the time difference and other reasons, the last states in the US midterm elections will close voting at midnight on the 8th or 1 am EST on the 9th. With multiple state campaigns and a large number of mail-in ballots to count, the final results of this midterm election may take days or weeks to be revealed.

2The Gates Foundation announces a new commitment

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation recently announced a commitment of $1.4 billion to help smallholder farmers cope with the short- and long-term impacts of climate change, in response to African leaders' call for countries to rapidly increase financing for adaptation.

The Gates Foundation says climate change has brought unprecedented food and economic crises to many regions. More than 2 billion people worldwide depend on small-scale agriculture for food and income, but less than 2% of climate finance is spent on helping them adapt to the effects of climate change. Escalating climate threats can limit the yields and resilience of smallholder farmers, further threatening food security, leading to protracted and intensifying food and economic crises.

The Gates Foundation notes that it will fund a range of short- and long-term initiatives over the next four years to help smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia build climate resilience and maintain food security. The grant will focus on stimulating Africa-led innovation projects, including creating a number of climate-smart agriculture projects, developing new applications of digital technologies, supporting climate-smart innovation for smallholder livestock and supporting women smallholder farmers to reach their full potential.

Book in Your Life

1Childhood

Childhood is the first in a trilogy of autobiographical novels created by Soviet writer Maxim Gorky based on his own experiences. His childhood life vividly reproduced the living conditions of the lower-class people of Tsarist Russia in the 1870s and 1880s, and wrote Gorky's understanding of suffering and his unique views on social life.

Words Focus

1When I Am Dead, My Dearest

When I am dead, my dearst,

Sing no sad songs for me;

Plant thou no roses at my head,

Nor shady cypss tree:

别为我哀歌悲切;

也不要柏树茂密;

Be the green grass above me

With showers and dwedrops wet:

And if thou wilt, remember,

And if thou wilt, forget.

沾着湿润的灵珠雨水;

I shall not see the shadows,

I shall not feel the rain;

I shall not hear the nightingale

Sing on as if in pain:

不会感觉雨天来临;

一声声仿佛哀鸣;

And deraming through the twilight

That doth not rise nor set,

Haply I may remember,

And haply may forget.

它从不升起,也永不沉沦;

2Daily Creed

Let me be a little kinder,

Let me be a little blinder

To the faults of those about me,

Let me praise a little more.

Let me be, when I am weary,

Just a little bit more cheery;

Let me be a little meeker

With the brother who is weaker;

Let me strive a little harder

To be all that I should be.

Let me be more understanding

And a little less demanding,

Let me be the sort of friend

That you have always been to me.

World Culture

1Food Culture in Lebanon

The staple food of the Lebanese is chicken, mutton and vegetables, so 60% of their dishes are mainly vegetables. All things are pure, which is the biggest feature of Lebanese cuisine. All cooking materials, including seasonings, are fresh. The so-called purity is natural and clean from inside to outside. Vegetables are bought fresh every day, while mutton is the first choice for meat. Because sheep are vegetarian animals, and they only eat clean grass, not trampled grass, Lebanese people believe that sheep are the cleanest animals.

Lebanon, with its colorful culture, has naturally become a great gathering of world famous food in the catering field. Here, you can easily taste all kinds of French, Italian, Chinese, Japanese and Arabic food. There are even Mexican, Armenian and Thai restaurants.

In addition, tourists must also try two kinds of fast food of traditional Lebanese cuisine. One is a kind of food similar to chicken roll, which is found all over the Middle East; The other is called, a kind of something similar to fried meatballs and sandwiches made by wrapping vegetables and garlic sauce in a big cake.

Türkiye is an Islamic country across Eurasia, known as the cradle of civilization. It is the center of the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire and the Ottoman Empire. It has a long history of 6500 years and the cultural and historical heritage of 13 different civilizations. In addition, the terrain surrounded by the sea on three sides and the complicated inland geographical environment make it have extremely rich tourism resources. Different Asia, Different Europe means that Türkiye spans two continents and has a unique style with multiple cultural relics.

Recently, Türkiye is famous for its beautiful natural resources; The green waters of the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean coast, the fairyland like landforms of Cappadocia formed by volcanic lava, the wild flowers and cloud shrouded forests of the Black Sea Mountains, and the unique scenery of the rugged grasslands in the east.

The charming natural scenery and rich cultural relics and historic sites make Türkiye a tourist paradise. However, today Türkiye is deeply attracted by the perfect integration of various cultures, new and old, eastern and western, modern and traditional.
